Athens Collegiate Showdown

Athens (PA)- After a successful event last season that featured two National Champions (Dowling, NCAA DII, and Messiah, NCAA DIII) as well as NCAA DI quarterfinalist Towson, the second annual Athens Collegiate Showdown, Friday April 18th and Saturday April 19th, has finalized its field and has a couple of new features.

The biggest change to the event will be the hosting of a professional friendly on Friday April 18th. Two USL rivals, the Rochester Rhinos and the Harrisburg City Islanders, will square off at Alumni Stadium at 7:15 PM. Tickets for the event are $15 for box seating and $5 for general admission. Tickets go on sale on March 17th.

The biggest change to the collegiate event will be the formation of two groups during the day time session. Last season, the teams played for a place through their records only. Dowling College won the day portion with a 3-0-1 record. This season, the groups will play out to place games (1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th). Group A will feature St. Bonaventure, New York Institute of Technology, Lock Haven, and Division III power Stevens Institute of Technology. Group B will host Hartwick, East Stroudsburg, and Division III powers Gettysburg and York (PA). Each team will play 3 40 minute contests against their group squads and the seeding for the place games will be according to their group record.

The night cap of the event will feature a round robin of Division I schools with Bucknell, Hofstra, and Penn State competing. These games will be 50 minutes in length and the champion will be awarded on record alone. Last year, Towson took the event with a 2-0 record over Binghamton and Bucknell.

Its great to have three of our nine teams returning for another year of the ACS. We were able to raise $3,300 for our local fire departments and we hope to top that this year, said Northern Tier Athletic Foundation President Brian Marshall. The inclusion of such a high quality professional match will hopefully draw more fans to our collegiate event the next day. We have some of the best collegiate soccer teams in the nation attending.

Tickets for the Athens Collegiate Showdown will also be $15 for box seating and $5 for general admission. These tickets also go on sale on March 17th. For more information on the Athens Collegiate Showdown, go to www.athenscollegiateshowdown.com for a complete schedule and list of teams.

The weekend went extremely well. The Rhinos defeated the City Islanders 2-1 on Friday night. Then Hartwick defeated Stevens in the championship game on penalty kicks (2-1). East Stroudsburg defeated NYIT (a rematch of the NCAA D2 First Round) 1-0 on a very nice volley. Gettysburg and Lock Haven tied at 0 to finish in a tie for 5th place and York (PA) tied St. Bonaventure 0-0 for a share of 7th place. Penn State defeated Hofstra 1-0, then Bucknell defeated Hofstra 1-0, and Penn State defeated Bucknell 2-0 with two goals in the last five minutes. Great weekend!!! I would like to thank all the coaches and fans that attended the event and I would like to thank all of you on d3kicks for your support.

How about an update and scores on the Athens SHowdown?

I really believe York needs to be considered a front runner for the day time championship. They will have two tough tests in their group with matches against Hartwick (solid MAC team) and East Stroudsburg. Should be a very entertaining event, don't forget the Rochester/Harrisburg friendly!

Messiah did well.. kind of sloppy but decent, I dont believe they scored more than 1 goal though. I believe York will do very well and Stevens will hold their own. We will find out I guess but I will be there to watch it all unfold as I am an alumni of Athens.

This event was awsome, and this year's going to be even better. The Rhinos vs. The City Islanders followed by 11 NCAA men's soccer teams! April 18

What a great tournament! How did Messiah do? What is anyone's prediction about York or Stevens?
