Bukoski's Header Lifts Hopkins over DeSales

BALTIMORE, MD Freshman Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) scored just 43 seconds into the second overtime to break a scoreless draw and lift #18 Johns Hopkins to a 1-0 win over visiting DeSales in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays improve to 18-3-0 overall while the Bulldogs end their season at 10-10-2. For Hopkins it is the first overtime win in the NCAA Tournament since a 1-0 win over Muhlenberg in the 1994 Sweet 16.

The Bulldogs defense and the play of goalie Rusty Riedmiller kept the Blue Jays offense at bay for most of the game. But a red card on DeSales midfielder Andrew Marshall in the 90th minute opened things up for the Blue Jays. Hopkins nearly ended the game late in the first overtime on a hard shot by junior Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) but Tony Aufiero cleared it off the line to keep the match scoreless.

At the start of the second overtime, sophomore Nathan Wysk (Dunedin, FL/Palm Harbor University High) collected a loose ball at the top left corner of the Bulldogs box and chipped it over the defense. Bukoski, wide open on the far post, headed it home for his team-best 20th goal of the season in the 101st minute.

Hopkins goalie, sophomore Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. Riedmiller finished with 12 saves in the loss for the Bulldogs. Hopkins had the edge in shots (21-4) and corners (10-5).

Hopkins advances to the second round and will play the winner of the Franklin & Marshall-N.C. Wesleyan game. The Blue Jays are now 11-10-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a 3-0-0 record at historic Homewood Field. The Diplomats and the Bishops will play at 8:00 pm Saturday at Homewood. The second round match at Homewood is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 11.
