Spartan�s Drop Heartbreaker to Host Maroons in NCAA Tournament
The Aurora University women�s soccer team ended their season with a 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women�s Soccer Championships. The loss ended a record breaking season for the Spartans, which saw them finish with an overall record of 19-3-1.
The game was dominated by defense and opportunities were few and far between for both teams. The Spartan�s biggest scoring chance came on a sophomore forward Kim Knaub breakaway mid-way through the second half, but Knaub was stopped on a save by Chicago senior goalkeeper Amanda Sutter.
For Chicago, the scoring opportunities in regulation were more common, but the stellar play by Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis kept the game tied at zero heading into overtime. Jarvis would finish the game with two saves.
The overtime started off promising for AU, with the Spartans controlling the ball on their half. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the game did not end up the way the Spartan faithful in attendance had hoped as Chicago scored the games only goal 2:53 into the first overtime.
Chicago�s sophomore midfielder Katie Klamann found the back of the net off of a rebound on a corner kick giving Chicago the 1-0 overtime victory.
The win allows Chicago to advance into the second round of play, facing the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who defeated the College of St. Benedict 3-2 in double overtime.
For the Spartans (19-3-1), the loss snapped a 19 game winning streak, which was tied for a school record. The season concludes for the Spartans, a season in which the Spartans set school or tied records for wins (19), consecutive games with a goal scored (22), consecutive wins (19), team shutouts (12) and lowest goals against average (0.65).
