Maroons Defeat Aurora in NCAA 1st Round


CHICAGO -- Katie Klamann scored the only goal of the match early in the first overtime period to lift the University of Chicago to a 1-0 win over Aurora University in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Saturday at Stagg Field.

Klamann scored the first goal of her career from eight yards out following a corner kick 2:53 into overtime.

Chicago (12-4-3) held a 15-5 edge in shots for the match, including a 10-3 advantage after the first half. The Maroons also attempted six corner kicks to one for Aurora (19-3-1), which had won its previous 19 games.

Amanda Sutter stopped three shots en route to the shutout, her ninth of the year. Her Aurora counterpart, Jenny Jarvis, collected a pair of saves in a losing effort.

Chicago, which is competing in the NCAA Division III tournament for the ninth time in 12 years, will take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (16-4-1) for the regional title Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pointers defeated the College of St. Benedict 3-2 in double overtime in Saturday's second contest.
