2007 NCAA MEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND - Host Middlebury Hands Wheaton 5-0 Setback
MIDDLEBURY, VT- The Middlebury College men's soccer team became just the second team to post five goals in a game against Wheaton College in the last 11 seasons, as the Panthers blanked the Lyons, 5-0 during Saturday afternoon's second-round game of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Making its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and eighth overall, Wheaton finishes its season with a 13-7-3 record. The Lyons are ranked eighth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Middlebury, which will learn of its opponent and site of next weekend's sectional round on Sunday evening, collected its 13th shutout of the season to improve to 15-2-1. The Panthers are tied for 11th nationally and ranked second in the region.
Middlebury, which remained unbeaten at home through nine games while yielding just one goal, scored the game-winner just 4:21 in, as senior Casey Ftorek (Wolfeboro, NH/Taft) tallied the first of three goals. Delivering a natural hat trick, Ftorek also posted goals in the 20th and 48th minutes. The Panthers rounded out their scoring at 58:34 and 71:17.
Despite allowing the five markers, Wheaton freshman keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) was impressive with a season-best nine saves. Panther junior Brian Bush (Madison, WI/Edgewood) needed just one stop to record his ninth shutout of the season. Middlebury finished with advantages of 31-6 in shots and 7-3 in corner kicks.
