Kane, Vallone Help Leopards Get Back on Winning Track
BOSTON, Mass. Senior forward Aly Kanes (Sharon, Mass.) first goal of the season snapped a 0-0 tie and freshman keeper Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) earned her second shutout of the season with a seven-save performance as the Wentworth womens soccer team (6-6-1, 6-3-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference) got back on the winning track with a 1-0 win over Salve Regina (4-9-0, 4-5-0).
With Wentworth holding an early 3-1 shot advantage, the Leopards had a prime opportunity in the 20th minute to get on the board first when senior defender Mallory Prentiss (Barre, Mass.) took a shot that a Seahawk defender stopped from going in the goal. On the ensuing rebound, she put a shot off the crossbar and, after getting her own rebound, took one last shot, which was saved by Salve sophomore keeper Kate Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.).
The Seahawks would have their own chance to break the ice in the 33rd minute, but a header by junior defender Ryan Murphy (Wilmington, Mass.) off a corner from senior midfielder Kacie Gallo (Methuen, Mass.) cleared the crossbar. After 45:00 of play, Wentworth held a 13-4 shot advantage
The second half would see both teams trying to take control, but the play would be back and forth for most of the half. At the 79:20 mark, junior forward Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) would take a shot for Wentworth that hit the crossbar. Senior forward Erin Abdella (Southbury, Conn.) was able to obtain the rebound and find Kane, whose shot found a gap in the left side of the goal.
Vallone made seven saves for the Leopards, while Vaudrain turned aside 14 shots. Wentworth held a 24-11 shot advantage, including 16-8 in shots on goal.
Wentworth hosts the University of New England Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Prior to that game, the seven members of the Leopard senior class will be honored. That same day the Seahawks step out of league play and travel to UMass Dartmouth.
