Nonis Scores Twice; Valiants Burst Into Win Column

Freshman Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario) scored a pair of goals as the Valiants won their first Freedom Conference match in program history and won for the first time in 2007, beating Kings (Pa.) 2-0 Tuesday afternoon in a weather-shortened contest.

After a brutal 13-match stretch against one of the nations toughest non-conference schedules, Manhattanville opened Freedom Conference play with a win to set up a showdown at home Saturday against league-leading Arcadia . Only the second team with a below .500 record the Valiants have played this season, Kings (Pa.) mustered just six shots and Manhattanville never looked back after scoring in the 15th minute.

Nonis recorded the first multi-goal game by a Valiant this season and took over the team scoring lead with her effort. The freshman took a long through ball from Cybil Robinson ( South Lake Tahoe, Calif. ) for the deciding goal, then added some icing in the 51st minute when she took a Monarch turnover all the way for her third goal of the year.

The match was halted after 79:10 of action because of severe rain and lightning, and ruled complete after a 30 minute delay made conditions too dark to continue.

The Valiants out-shot Kings ( Pa. ) 12-6, the first time Manhattanville has out-shot an opponent since September 18 at Drew. The Monarchs managed just two shots on goal, with Ali Bromson (Suffield, Conn.) and Maureen Hickey ( Pleasantville, N.Y. ) each making one stop between the pipes. Bromson made her 14th straight start and played the first 61:00 for her first career victory.

The win was Manhattanvilles first since the Valiants won the 2006 ECAC Metro Tournament Championship last November against Farmingdale State . Manhattanvilles 13 non-conference opponents in 2007 had a combined 94-53-16 record entering Tuesdays action after the Valiants made an effort to upgrade their schedule following a school-record 14 wins in 2006 as a member of the Skyline Conference.

Rachael Donatiello made eight saves for the Monarchs (3-10-1, 1-1-0 Freedom), who beat Delaware Valley 2-1 Saturday in their league opener. Meghan OKane, Kaitlin Wilcox and Meghan Snavely each had two shots for the hosts.

The Valiants (1-11-2, 1-0-0 Freedom) and Knights will play at GoValiants.com Field Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the first match of a Manhattanville soccer doubleheader. Arcadia entered Tuesdays action with a 10-2-1 overall record after a 2-1 defeat of DeSales Saturday.
