BATTLE OF UMAC LEADERS GOES TO SAINTS WHO EXTEND THEIR LEAD OVER MORRIS
DULUTH, Minn. -- Though the fog had cleared from Saturdays game in Duluth (a 4-0 win over Presentation College), the clouds still loomed overhead Sunday afternoon as the St. Scholastica Saints (11-2-1, 9-0-0 UMAC) defeated the Minnesota-Morris Cougars (7-4-0, 6-2-0 UMAC) by a 1-0 score at Duluths Public Schools Stadium.
The game proved to be a defensive battle as the top two teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference standings combined for a mere three shots in the first half and went to the locker rooms tied, unsurprisingly, at 0-0.
The ominous clouds that had hung overhead from the start finally broke loose at halftime as a downpour and lightning show appeared over the stadium to put a delay on the games conclusion.
When the rain finally broke off, the sun broke free as did the Saints when play eventually resumed in the second half. Senior Shannon Kresky caught a Robin Johnson pass lofted over the defense, dribbled to the center of the box and beat Morris goalie Andrea Dexter in the games 50th minute for her seventh goal of the 2007 season.
Playing a much more open game in the final 45 minutes, St. Scholastica tallied 12 shots while limiting Morris to just three. Dexter stopped six of the seven Saints shots that made it on goal but Kreskys score proved to be all the Saints would need.
St. Scholastica goalkeeper Kelly Momsen had two saves in the shutout victory, her sixth of the season and 20th of her career making her the Saints all-time career shutouts leader.
Four time UMAC Coach of the Year Dave Reyelts earned his 100th career victory as the Saints head coach with the win over Morris as well.
