Wis.-Stevens Point Advances Past Chicago in Shootout
CHICAGO -- University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point goalkeeper Meredith DeCaluwe made six saves in regulation and overtime before stopping three of seven penalty kick attempts in the shootout as the Pointers advanced past the University of Chicago in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Sunday at Stagg Field.
After the teams played to a double-overtime scoreless tie, Wisconsin-Stevens Point (16-4-2) edged Chicago (12-4-4) 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout.
Both teams converted four of their first five attempts. In the sixth round, DeCaluwe and Chicago netminder Amanda Sutter both made saves to force a seventh round. After DeCaluwe stopped the Maroons' next shooter, UWSP's Jackie Spees found the back of the net to send the Pointers into next week's sectionals.
Chicago attempted nearly twice as many shots as the Pointers, 27-15, during the game's 110 minutes. The Maroons held a 26-11 edge during regulation and the first overtime, before the Pointers notched a 4-1 advantage in the second overtime.
Chicago produced the best scoring opportunity for either team in the overtime. Following a corner kick six minutes into the first extra period, Olivia Ndyabagye's shot hit the crossbar and sailed out of play.
DeCaluwe made a pair of key saves in the second half. She dove to her left to stop a 16-yard Ndyabagye shot in the 51st minute before turning aside Anne Scherer's shot from inside the box with six minutes left in regulation.
The Pointers had their best scoring chance of the second stanza in the 77th minute when Kaylee Weise's shot from 10 yards out hit the side of the net.
The teams combined for 19 shots in the first half. Chicago fired 11 shots, including a 7-yard attempt from Katie Klamann which traveled just outside the far post in the 23rd minute.
Amanda Prawat provided the Pointers with a prime scoring chance when she hit the right post just four minutes into the contest.
