Hamilton Upsets #24 NYU 2-0 in NCAA First Round

Max Akuamoah-Boateng and Topher Breedlove tallied goals while Anthony Carello made seven saves as Hamilton College upset 2006 national semifinalist New York University 2-0 in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship hosted by NYU at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Hamilton (10-4-3), the Liberty League champion, advanced to face New Jersey City University (17-4-1), a 2-0 victor over Castleton State College in the other first-round game Saturday at NJIt.

Meanwhile, NYU, which earned consecutive NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in program history, ended its season with a 13-5-1 mark.

Although the Violets created more opportunities, owning a 19-5 edge on shots and a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks, the Continentals capitalized on their two best opportunities.

Akuamoah-Boateng put Hamilton ahead 1-0 at 40:42, heading a well-placed cross from Dan Dropkin-Frank to the far post past the reach of NYU goalkeeper Chris Wright for his fourth goal of the year.

NYU started the second half with two golden scoring chances, but Adam Dhanens put a shot off the crossbar and Robert Keller's opportunity from point-blank range was smothered by Carello.

Hamilton then took advantage of a Violet mistake as they tried to play the ball backward. Breedlove collected a loose ball and lofted it into the top right corner for his second tally of the season, staking the Continentals to a 2-0 lead.

NYU continued to push forward, with Dhanens having two more chances thwarted by Carello, whose brilliant play between the pipes helped Hamilton notch its 10th shutout of the season. The Continentals have allowed only 10 goals this season.

Wright made two saves in the loss for NYU, which saw the collegiate careers of seniors Nicholas Palmer, Matthewe Ramirez, Jeritt Thayer and Matthew Tier end. Thayer was a 2006 All-American, just the third in Violet men's soccer history and their first in 37 years.
