AGNES SCOTT SOCCER TO HOST SMART WOMEN SWEAT CHALLENGE THIS WEEKEND
The Agnes Scott athletic facilities will be filled with athletes, families and fans, as the Scotties host their annual Smart Women Sweat Challenges this Saturday and Sunday.
In total, six different teams will be competing during the soccer tournament this weekend. The Smart Women Sweat Challenges have a round-robin format, which will not produce a tournament champion. Instead, Agnes Scott Athletic Director Joeleen Akin said the rewards of participating in such a tournament go far beyond a trophy.
�We began this series of tournaments to bring like institutions together in the positive spirit of athletic competition,� Akin said. �When these women are able to come together and compete, they are gaining a better understanding of the importance of hard work, sacrifice, dedication and team.
�Those are the important trophies they will take with them after their college playing careers are long over.�
Agnes Scott hosts the Smart Women Sweat Challenges in all seven of their varsity sports. With recruiting currently underway for a lacrosse program scheduled to begin play during the 2009-10 school year, an eighth Smart Women Sweat Challenge is likely. This year�s soccer participants are Meredith College, Salem College, Peace College, Spelman College, Huntingdon College and host Agnes Scott College.
The Scotties� soccer team is coming home for the first time this year after having started with four consecutive away games. The road has taken its toll on the young Scotties as they have started 0-4. �We are young and our first year players have had a pretty rude introduction to the college game,� said Head Coach Joe Bergin. �The schedule will benefit them down the road, but right now it is hard for the players to look past our record, so I am excited to get back home in front our fans for this tournament.�
The Smart Women Sweat Challenges are sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Kroger. Russell Athletic is the official apparel for the Smart Women Sweat Challenges, a series of contests hosted by Agnes Scott Athletics, in which women�s colleges compete in various sports.
