Alvarez, Hough Net Two Apiece as Nationally-Ranked Lyons Down RIC

NORTON, MA- Sophomores Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) tallied two goals apiece, and the nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team posted its third straight shutout with a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island College on Thursday in Mirrione Stadium.

The Lyons, who are ranked 13th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 5-1 while extending their shutout streak to 337:34 and posting their 14th clean sheet in the last 17 contests. The Anchorwomen fell to 1-5 on the season.

Hough tallied twice in a 10:27 span early in the contest, netting the game-winner for the second straight contest off junior Lyndsey McManus' (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) helper at 12:59 before converting junior Rosie Levy's (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) pass during the 24th minute. Levy also played a role in the next marker, dishing a corner kick off to freshman Jessica Gray (Carver, MA/Sacred Heart), who buried her first collegiate goal at 36:25.

Wheaton, which held a 19-1 shot advantage at halftime and finished with 34 of the game's 37 shots, received a pair of second-half tallies from Alvarez. The striker scored at 60:29 from out front off a touch by freshman Kristin Lang (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler Area), who recorded her first collegiate point, before Alvarez scored 11:46 later to make it 6-0. In between, freshman Laurel MacPherson (Belmont, NH/Belmont) found the back of the net for the first time in her college career with a marker at 64:24.

Freshman Kasey Frasier (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) posted her second shutout behind one second-half save, while sophomore Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI/Middletown) had nine stops for the Anchorwomen. Wheaton held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lyons complete a four-game homestand on Sunday when they take on the University of Maine at Farmington in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
