Rutgers-Camden men earn No. 13 ranking
CAMDEN (Sept. 9, 2008) � The Rutgers University-Camden men�s soccer team has broken into uncharted waters with the release of the second weekly NSCAA/adidas Division III Top 25 poll.
The 5-0 Scarlet Raptors are ranked No. 13 nationally in today�s poll, the top NCAA ranking the team has ever received since its first year of playing as a NCAA Div. III program in 1978.
The Scarlet Raptors broke into the first weekly NSCAA poll at No. 20 on Sept. 2, matching their previous high NCAA national ranking achieved on Oct. 19, 2004, when they were 13-0-4.
Rutgers-Camden already has posted victories over three NCAA teams and two conference champions from last season. The Scarlet Raptors� five wins have included the championships at a pair of tournaments. They opened the season winning the North Carolina Wesleyan Fall Classic Aug. 30-31, defeating a pair of teams ranked in the NSCAA pre-season Top 25: host NC Wesleyan (pre-season No. 9, a 1-0 win) and Greensboro College (No. 25, a 3-1 win).
The Scarlet Raptors captured the title at their own Cialella Soccer Classic over the weekend, edging powerful Eastern University, 1-0, in the title game. Rutgers-Camden freshman goalie Tim VanLiew (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) collected 10 saves in that game on the way to earning honors as the tournament�s Defensive MVP.
In the opening game of the Cialella Soccer Classic, senior forward Andrew Dorsey (Mt. Laurel, NJ/The King�s Christian School) had a hat trick and added an assist for nine points in a 4-0 win over Alvernia College. Dorsey was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament. VanLiew and Dorsey joined fullbacks A.J. O�Malley (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Township) and Chase Komer (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) on the all-tournament team.
O�Malley and Komer serve as two of the Raptors� four captains, along with back Tom Collins (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and midfielder Mark Gidjunis (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). All of the captains are juniors except O�Malley, a senior who is in his third season as one of the Rutgers-Camden captains.
Through their first five games, the Scarlet Raptors have posted three shutouts and a 0.60 goals-against average, with VanLiew playing all but 45 minutes in goal and owning all five wins. O�Malley, Komer and sophomore Stan Reahm (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) have started all five games in the back, while Collins has started four.
The team�s strong midfield includes the other three Raptors who have started all five games: sophomores Ryan Dougherty (Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick) and Shane McGrory (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and junior Jake Vollman (Stratford, NJ/Sterling).
Dorsey leads the team in scoring (four goals, one assist for nine points), followed by sophomore forward Turgut Kilicoglu (Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City) and freshman forward Todd Kleinstuber (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township), both with two goals and four points. McGrory (one goal, two assists) also has four points.
Vollman leads the team with three assists.
In addition to the No. 13 national ranking, the Scarlet Raptors rose from third to second in the Metro Region rankings. They trail only New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State University, which is currently ranked No. 6 nationally. The Raptors will play at Montclair State Oct. 4. The Red Hawks are one of seven teams on the Raptors� schedule who have been ranked or received votes toward the national poll this season, including current No. 4 York (PA) and No. 19 The College of New Jersey. In addition to pre-season No. 9 North Carolina Wesleyan, No. 12 New Jersey City University and No. 25 Greensboro College, conference rival William Paterson received votes toward the first weekly NSCAA poll.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday, Sept. 13, when it hosts the University of Scranton in a 7 p.m. Family Night game.
