Plattsburgh Claims Cardinal Classic


PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.(Sep. 7, 2008) -The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team earned its ninth consecutive Cardinal Classic championship on Sunday by virture of being the only 2-0 squad in the two-day tournament. The host Cardinals (4-0 overall) shut out Plymouth State today, 5-0, at the Field House Soccer Complex--the 12th game in a row without allowing an opponent to score, dating to last season. The Panthers fall to 1-1.

All-Tournament Team: Offensive MVP--Pat Shaughnessy, Plattsburgh; Defensive MVP--Noel Tipovski, Plattsburgh; Dylan Reed, Potsdam; Semir Mehmedovic, Plymouth; Gareth Stephens, Plymouth; Andrew Fusco, Plattsburgh; Nolan Ryan, Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh goalkeeper John San Filippo tied Chris Balducci (1990-92) and Andrew Cumbo (1995-98) for the most career shutouts in school history with 24.

Ryan Ormsby came off the bench to lead the Plattsburgh offense with two goals. In the 22nd minute, the Cardinals benefited from a Panther own goal when a defender tried to clear a through-pass away from a striker but the ball lofted over the head of his keeper and into the goal.

Plattsburgh outshot Plymouth 18-2 and enjoyed a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the first game of the afternoon, Potsdam (2-1-1) routed Green Mountain (0-4), 6-1, behind two goals apiece from Dylan Reed and Brandon Kelley. The Eagles' lone tally came off a Bears player for an own goal.
