Salem, VA The Maroons fell to Lynchburg, 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening. The Maroons finish the season, 18-4-1 while the Hornets improved to 18-3-3. The Maroons are now 9-15 against the Hornets all-time, 0-8 in post-season play.
It was a surprisingly low scoring affair, as both teams were ranked within the top-25 in the nation in scoring. The match got physical, as 30 fouls were called.
There were three cards assessed, including a red card from Roanokes Maureen Chenot in the 25th minute. The Maroons were forced to play with a player down the remainder of the match.
The only goal of the night came in the second half for Lynchburg. Betsy Kwiatkowski got past two defenders and shot the ball past senior goalkeeper Erin Hanson to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead with 38 minutes to play.
The Maroons would take control of possession for the remainder of the game, as they outshot the Hornets, 10-6 in the second half. They had some good looks, with five shots on goal during the second half, but couldnt capitalize.
Erin Hanson would finish with six saves for the Maroons. She finished her career with 167 saves, which ranks her fifth all-time. Meredith Grunewald finished with three shots.
Junior forward Kristen McCoy finished with 15 goals and 31 points on the season. She is tied for fourth all-time in points (93) and tied for second in goals with 41. Grunewald capped her junior season with 10 goals and a team-high 12 assists on the season. She is two assists shy of breaking the career assists record at Roanoke.
The Maroons close their season with an 18-4-1 record overall; 10-1 in the ODAC. The overall record and total wins are each school-records. They already broke the school-record in shots, shots on goal and goals in a season during the final game of the regular season. The 18 wins are more than the past two seasons combined. They were also ranked 24th in the D3Kicks National Poll.
The Hornets will advance to Atlanta, GA to play Emory University in the NCAA Round of 16.
