Davidson's Pair of Tourney Shutout Wins Leads to NEWMAC Weekly Honor
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer standout Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) was the third Lyon to be named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week this season, as he was honored for the week ending on Sunday, November 4.
Davidson was a key cog in both of the regionally-ranked Lyons' shutouts over the weekend, helping Wheaton capture its seventh NEWMAC Tournament title in 10 seasons. During the top-seeded Lyons' 2-0 victory over number four Clark University on Saturday, he posted a pair of second-half saves in keeping the Cougars off the board. Davidson also came up big in Sunday's 4-0 championship-game win over number two Babson College, turning aside all four of Babson's first-half shots and five overall.
Against NEWMAC teams this fall, Davidson had a 5-1-1 record with a 0.69 goals against average, .853 save percentage and three shutouts. In the last nine games, Davidson had a 0.81 GAA and .841 save percentage while surrendering more than one goal only once. For the season, he carries a 1.12 GAA.
Ranked eighth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton is 12-6-3 on the season. Set to make their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and eighth overall, the Lyons host Bridgewater State College in Wednesday's opening round at 1:00 p.m.
