Ferriero Garners First NEWMAC Weekly Accolade of Career
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer standout Jim Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) garnered the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week accolade of his career for the week ending on Sunday, October 21.
Ferriero, who is a senior co-captain with the team, assisted both goals and anchored Wheaton's backfield during a 2-1 win over Babson College on Saturday, helping the Lyons clinch their seventh NEWMAC regular season title in the league's 10-year history. Ferriero's free kicks in the eighth and 15th minutes each led to goals, as he guided a defense that did not yield a marker until the 82nd minute.
Entering Saturday's game, Ferriero had three career assists through his first 77 contests. He has led the Lyons, who are ranked in a tie for eighth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), to a 10-5-3 record. Wheaton's defense boasts a 1.28 goals against average with three shutouts, having held opponents to one goal or fewer 12 times.
Ferriero and the Lyons head to Worcester on Saturday for their regular season finale at Clark University at 1:00 p.m. With a 4-0-1 conference mark, Wheaton is seeking its fourth undefeated run through league play.
