Bukoski, Drake Lead Hopkins to 2-1 win over Gettysburg
BALTIMORE, MD The #20 Johns Hopkins mens soccer team (14-3-0, 6-2-0 CC) clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 win over visiting Gettysburg (10-6-0, 5-3-0 CC). The Blue Jays and the Bullets were tied for second in the conference heading into the match.
Gettysburg struck first when Ryan Shaffer scored in the 40th minute. Shaffer collected a 50-50 ball about 25 yards out and beat his defender as he headed towards the Hopkins goal. Sophomore goalie Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) came out to challenge and Shaffer tucked a low ball inside the far post.
Hopkins pulled even in the 70th minute after a Gettysburg foul inside the box. Freshman Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) was pulled down by a Bullets defender and was awarded the penalty kick. Bukoski stepped to the line and fired the ball right down the middle as Matt Langston dove to his left. For Bukoski, it is team and conference leading 17th goal of the season.
Freshman David Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) gave Hopkins the lead in the 75th minute. The ball was played into the Gettysburg defensive zone and Drake ran on to it. He beat his defender and then Langston and calmly tucked the ball into the open net for his 11th of the season.
Mierley finished with two saves in the win, while Langston posted four saves in the loss. Hopkins had the edge in shots (14-4) and corners (12-3).
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Saturday at Washington College. The Centennial Conference match is set for 7:00 pm. Fans can follow live stats at: https://washingtoncollegesports.com/livestats/msoccer/xlive.htm.
