Manhattanville Stunned by Baruch
Despite holding a 39-9 advantage in shots � and a 16-5 edge on goal � Manhattanville was held scoreless Sunday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field, losing 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion when Baruch scored with 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
The wide margin on the stat sheet was just as evident on the field, where Manhattanville dominated play, controlling the possession throughout the match. The Valiants had countless chances to take the lead in the second half, out-shooting the Bearcats 21-0 over the second 45 minutes and holding a 37-5 edge at the end of regulation.
But Baruch found new life in the overtime, converting in the waning seconds when Vincent Favara headed in a corner from Caner Yilmaz in a wild scramble at the near post. The goal came on the Bearcats� four shot of overtime, where Baruch actually held a 4-2 advantage in shots.
Kris Morrice (Kirriemuir, Scotland) had six shots in the first half and 10 overall, leading the Valiants and totaling one more than the entire Baruch squad. Morrice twice came in alone against keeper Nelson DiBastino � once in the opening minutes and again in the second half � only to be denied by DiBastino each time. Mitchel Ghiggia (Port Chester, N.Y.), Odinga Andenga (Kakamega, Kenya), Mike Abbondondolo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Andres Avila (Port Chester, N.Y.) each had at least four shots for Manhattanville.
DiBastino made 14 saves in the win, getting help twice from defenders who cleared balls off the goal line. Jerry Tellier (West Warwick, R.I.) made two saves and suffered the loss.
The Valiants� 39 shots marked a season high, five more than Manhattanville�s total against Maritime September 16, a game the Valiants also lost despite a wide disparity in shots.
Manhattanville (2-5-1) will close out a season-long five game homestand Saturday against Skidmore at 7:00 p.m. That match will be carried live as an audio broadcast on www.GoValiants.com, with live Gametracker coverage also available.
