Phipps Named Head Men's Soccer Coach at Buena Vista
Buena Vista University athletics director Jan Travis announced today that Scott Phipps has been hired as the Universitys head men's soccer coach. Phipps will begin his duties immediately.
We are excited about having Coach Phipps join our coaching staff, said Travis. His four years as a college soccer athlete along with his coaching experience at the high school and college level will be an asset to the program.
Phipps was the assistant women's soccer coach last season at Hastings College (Neb.). He had a hand in helping the team to a berth in the NAIA Region III Tournament. Hastings had four players selected to the all-conference team.
I am very excited to be a part of the Buena Vista family and proud to accept the head men's soccer position for the Beavers, Phipps commented. I am very thankful to have this opportunity. Buena Vista has a strong tradition that I am glad to be a part of.
Prior to his year at Hastings, Phipps served as the assistant mens and women's soccer coach at Iowa Central Community College in 2005. That season, the womens team placed seventh in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Phipps holds his National Coaching Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Before moving to the collegiate level, he coached high school, club, and youth soccer teams of varied ages. Most notably, he served as the assistant varsity girls soccer coach at North Kansas City High School for three years.
We will develop the Buena Vista men's soccer program into a consistent contender while also molding our young men to become leaders on and off the pitch, stated Phipps. I want to instill a winning tradition and attitude within the team, for winning is contagious. We will believe and strive for success day in and day out to get better.
Phipps played collegiate soccer for four years at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Park University (Mo.). He earned his undergraduate degree in communication arts at Park University. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in teaching in physical education from Hastings.
I would like to thank the Hastings College family for helping me prepare for this step in my journey, as well as coach Scott Anderson from North Kansas City and coach William McGowan from Iowa Central, Phipps said.
Phipps, who will also serve as the assistant womens coach, becomes the fifth mens head coach in the history of the program. He succeeds Matt Klosterman, who resigned from Buena Vista in the spring to accept a similar position at North Central College.
