Grove hired to lead McMurry's men
(May 10) - Athletic Director Bill Libby named Tim Grove the third men's soccer coach in school history Thursday. Grove brings several years of coaching experience from club teams as well as at the collegiate level and McMurry will be his second head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
Grove was most recently employed by the Nike Premier Club Texans FC who are one of the affliates of Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo where he was a trainer and staff coach and helped develop top-level players including national team members. He also worked to develop players at the high school level to help them latch on at the college level to play soccer while getting their degree.
As the head men's coach at Alma College in 2004, Grove led the Scots to a 9-13 record. Alma College is an NCAA Division III institution in Michigan. He helped the team to a 7-7 conference record in the MIAA and coached four all-conference players including two first-teamers.
Grove also served as the associate head coach for the Sioux Falls Spitfire soccer team under the Professional Development League. The team placed fifth in the Heartland Conference in 2006.
During the 2005-2006 school year, Grove was the assistant coach at Eastfield College for the women's soccer program in Mesquite. Grove helped lead the team to a second-place finish in the conference and the team made its first-ever postseason conference tournament.
Grove also spent time as an assistant track and field coach at Alma College and was the women's strength and conditioning coach at American Southwest Conference rival UT-Tyler while serving as the men's soccer assistant. That season in 2003, the Patriots posted a 20-1 record winning the ASC title and the NCAA Division III national title as well.
Grove was also very active in coaching at camps across Texas including Texas A&M;, Stephen F. Austin and North Texas University's soccer camps. He was also a coaching instructor for the North Texas Soccer Association from 2001-2004.
The Houston native played collegiately at Easter Illinois University (D1) and St. Edward's University in Austin. He also played in the United Soccer Leauges semi-professionaly. Grove graduated from Stephen F. Austin in 2003.
Grove holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, USSF National Youth License, USSF National C License, and an FA Level 1 Psychology Badge.
Grove will replace Steve Allan who left McMurry in April after four seasons of coaching the men and after one season as the women's coach in 2006 where he coached both squads. While the men's coach, Allan compiled a 35-36-6 record in four seasons and helped the team make two ASC Tournament appearances including a championship game appearance in 2004. As the women's coach in 2006, Allan helped the women's team win five games, which equaled the number of wins that the program had won in its first five years of existence.
