Turf vs. Grass and Season Kickoff

We are just days away (3 to be exact) from the 2007 season kickoff. This year promises to be a good one, and I would like to start this blog by welcoming back visitors from last year, as well as new visitors to this site. One topic that has come up quite frequently at this site, both in our poll and forum is the classic turf vs. real grass debate. Way back when I used to play d3 soccer (2 years ago now), 2 or 3 of the teams in our conference had field turf. This made me very jealous, not because i prefer to play on field turf over grass, but for many other reasons.

First of all, one problem that most schools have is that by the end of the season, grass fields become terrible because of all the use - especially those institutions that have one field for both men and women. The good thing about turf is that during preseason especially, the men's and women's soccer teams as well as the football team can practice on the turf, and not have to worry about divots or sacrificing the quality of the field.

The obvious disadvantage for turf fields the increased risk of injury and higher, arguably unnatural, speed of play. I guess it really depends on how well your team's grass fields are kept, and how much rain you get during the season...
