5/31/06 - Pioneers give Spain's top teams a run
The UW-Platteville soccer teams opened some eyes by playing competitively against two top-notch teams in Spain Thursday, May 25.

The Pioneer men played within 4-1 to Seville, who won the prestigious EUFA (European Football Association) Cup and had already defeated Real Madrid this season.

The women fell 6-0 to FC Seville, an all-star team comprised of Spain's top players, according to Pioneer Coach Chris Bianchi.

"They were better than most of the men's teams we played last year," Bianchi marvelled after the women's contest. "Laurie (Trifone, the UWP goalkeeper) was amazing and we only lost 6-0. She got several offers after the games from spectators to stay in the country and not leave for the U.S. Paula Duerst had a great game as center/mid, getting us some of our best scoring chances. Every single one of these players could be playing Division I and starting in ANY division 1 program in the states!"

In the men's game, Laity Loum scored the Pioneer goal, assisted by Alex Albright and Mike Volle. Cruz Munoz stopped 17 shots in the net.

"To put this in perspective, imagine our men's basketball team playing the LA Lakers' second or third team or our football team playing the Packers' second or third squad," Bianchi said. "I can't believe it! I am so very proud of both teams!"
